Happy New Year.


To ensure good luck, on New Year's Day eat:

Black-eyed peas and Ham hocks
Greens (collard, mustard, or turnip)
Cornbread

At least, that's how we do it down here.





Hoppin John
1 cup chopped onion
1 tablespoon bacon drippings
3 cups cooked black-eyed peas
1 cup chopped cooked ham
1/4 teaspoon ground cayenne pepper
3 cups cooked rice
salt to taste
sliced sweet onion

In a large saucepan sauté chopped onion in bacon drippings until tender. Stir in black-eyed peas, ham, and cayenne pepper. Simmer for 10 minutes; stir in hot cooked rice and salt. Serve hot with sliced onion.

Shouldn't one also have cornbread with the blackeyed peas?

Jane, that's a great recipe but I happen to be in a position to know that blackeyed peas are one of those things your not about to eat. Fess up. What do you really plan to eat for New Years day?

Jane, I'm a yankee by birth and we don't have that tradition, but to be gracious to my hostess, this New Year's day I ate black-eyed peas. Later that evening I got bit by another friend's dog.

So does the good luck not work for those born above the Mason-Dixon line, or would you say that I was lucky because I didn't get lock jaw?
